QR code size calculator
Enter what goes in the code and how far away people will stand. You get the smallest size that should still scan.
Print it at least
4.0 in
or 10.2 cm wide
- Distance: 40 in ÷ 10 = 4.0 in
- Detail: 33 squares at 0.4 mm = 0.6 in
- Smallest for any code: 0.8 in
How the answer is worked out
The calculator builds the same code the generator would and takes the largest of three limits.
- Distance: about a tenth of the scanning distance
- Detail: each square at least 0.4 mm, so more data needs more room
- Floor: never under 2 cm (0.8 in) wide
Size by scanning distance
For a short link, the distance rule usually decides. Treat these as minimums.
| Where it is scanned | Distance | Minimum width |
|---|---|---|
| Business card, label | 20 cm (8 in) | 2 cm (0.8 in) |
| Table card, flyer | 40 cm (16 in) | 4 cm (1.6 in) |
| Counter sign | 1 m (3 ft) | 10 cm (4 in) |
| Wall poster | 2 m (6.5 ft) | 20 cm (8 in) |
| Shop window | 5 m (16 ft) | 50 cm (20 in) |
How to print a QR code
Size is only one part. The rest decides whether it scans in real light.
- Use a vector file. PDF or SVG stays sharp at any size. Do not enlarge a small PNG.
- Keep it square, with its margin. Do not stretch the code or crop the blank border.
- Choose a matte surface. Gloss and curved packaging can reflect light into the camera.
- Test a proof at real distance. Stand where your visitors will stand, and try more than one phone.
Questions
What is the minimum size of a QR code?
We suggest 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for a short link scanned up close. Longer data needs more, and the calculator shows how much.
Why does a longer link need a bigger code?
More data means more squares. At a fixed print size each square gets smaller, until the camera can no longer tell them apart.
How big should a code be on a business card?
Usually 2 to 2.5 cm (about 1 in). A vCard holds more data than a short link, so check it with the calculator.
Does a logo change the size?
Yes. A logo needs stronger error correction, which adds squares. Tick the box to see the effect.
Will this QR code ever expire?
No. There is nothing that can expire: the code contains your data itself and works without any server. It keeps working as long as it can be scanned and, for a link, as long as that website exists.
Is it really free? Are there limits on scans?
Yes, it is free with no account. Scans are unlimited because nobody counts them: a scan happens entirely between the code and the phone. The site is paid for by advertising.
Do you see my data or logo?
No. The code is created in your browser and nothing is uploaded. You can load the page, go offline, and it keeps working.
Will it scan on every phone?
Every code is read back by a decoder in your browser before download, and you get a warning if that fails. That is a software check, so scan one printed copy with your own phone before a large print run.
